Background:
Founded as boys' school by James I in 1608; granted Royal Charter by Charles I in 1627; moved to current 27-acre site on College Hill in 1774; became co-educational in 1986, following amalgamation with Armagh Girls' High School. Extensive building and re-equipping programme completed in April 1990; extensive refurbishment of boarding department. Accommodation includes seven science laboratories, two home economics rooms, computer studies rooms, art and craft block, specialist music rooms; fully networked school. Renowned for rugby, hockey, cricket and tennis; nine rugby teams and six hockey teams; swimming also encouraged. Ulster Schools' rugby and hockey champions in 2004, the first time a school has achieved this double success since 1936; All-Ireland hockey champions in 2004. Debating, drama, Scripture Union. Music: choirs, orchestras, bands; Combined Cadet Force has 140 pupils as members; strong Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. Over-subscribed, with 1.5 applications per place. Sportsmark.
